  Rimfire ammunition

Rimfire ammunition Invented in 1845 is a type of firearm metallic cartridge whose primer is located within a hollow circumferential rim protruding from the base of its casing. Rimfire cartridges are typically small-caliber rounds that have no room for a primer such as a .22 caliber, but with this they may accidentally discharge if something falls on them or possibly if dropped from a high enough distance. A centerfire cartridge is big enough to utilize a primer and is therefore a safer way for ammunition to be discharged because it is less likely to drop something directly on the primer.

The difference between Centerfire and Rimfire Ammunition

Centerfire ammunition is used for rifles, shotguns, and handguns. In this type of ammunition, the primer is located in the center of the casing base. Most centerfire ammunition is reloadable.
Rimfire ammunition has the primer contained in the rim of the ammunition casing. Rimfire ammunition is limited to low-pressure loads. Rimfire cartridges are not reloadable.
